Indonesians gather in the capital Jakarta for a celebration of healthy living.

A 3-day international yoga festival has drawn thousands of participants from all over the country.

The event brings together celebrity yoga teachers from around the globe, including the United States, Canada, Australia and Russia.

More than 50 different yoga classes are on offer, and participants spend from 70 to 300 US dollars to take part in different classes.

While yoga's origin can be traced back to a form of Hindu spiritual discipline, in recent years the yoga movement has evolved far from its traditional meditative roots.

This can be seen in a wide variety of yoga classes that are available to the public.

There is headstand yoga, hip hop yoga, martial arts yoga, acrobatic yoga, running yoga and many more.

Festival director Anita Boentarman says yoga has become increasingly popular among Indonesians in the last 6 years.

Numerous yoga classes are offered in public gyms as well as in private classes.

Boentarman believes that holding a high-profile yoga festival in Jakarta will help put the capital city on the map as a yoga destination and promote yoga tourism in Indonesia.

"I would like to promote Jakarta to be a yoga destination for people from all over Indonesia. I would also like to give Indonesian students the opportunity to meet and practice with international yoga masters."

A popular yoga movement in the capital is vinyasa yoga, which aims to create a unique experience for each practitioner and find an advanced sense of awareness about each person's body.

Vinyasa yoga teacher Patrick Beach says awareness of oneself is important for people living in a bustling metropolitan city like Jakarta.

"When I travel and go to all these different places, and Jakarta is one of them where it's a very busy place. And with that, it gives an opportunity for people to really experience yoga and practice yoga because it's such a different thing than what they are doing every single day, which is the hustle and bustle of living in such a massive city."

Yoga teacher Dini Maharani is teaching people to master the head surfing position.

Head surfing involves doing a headstand for a long period of time.

Dini, who has taught yoga in Jakarta for 7 years, warns that head surfing is not for beginners.

"There are health benefits of practicing the headstand movement for students. Headstand helps the flow the blood to our head, and this movement is also useful for people to prevent hair loss."

30-year-old Devi Suhendi has been doing yoga for a year, and she finds it very calming.

"By doing yoga, I can stay calm in the face of stressful work in the office. Basic yoga teaches breathing control and trains us to handle emotion and take a breath."

Indonesia looks set to become an important yoga destination in the region. It is already hosting two major yoga festivals in Jakarta and Bali every year.

There has also been a plan to introduce yoga as an extracurricular activity in some high schools in Bali in the near future.
